Theano (Crotone, 6th century BC) was the first female mathematician in history. She was the wife of Pythagoras; she wrote treaties on the golden ratio and various treaties on physics and medicine. When her husband died during the uprising that took place in Crotone, the Pythagorean School was destroyed and all of its members were killed or exiled from the city, she took charge of disseminating the institution’s knowledge throughout Greece and Egypt alongside her daughters.
